Why Do Some of Us Have Double Chins?

Ever wonder why you may have a double chin? There are a number of reasons, including genetics, being overweight and age.

Genetics

Even thin people can have double chins if they are genetically prone to accumulate fat under their chin and on their upper neck area. If several members of your family have double chins, chances are you have one or could eventually develop a double chin at some point. Genes influence two factors contributing to double chin formation — how your body stores fat and retains water. If you possess strong "double chin genes" and have done everything possible to reduce your double chin, consider seeing a Kybella® doctor in Bakersfield, CA.

Being Overweight

The most common reason for development of a double chin is excess body fat. Unfortunately, many people lose a good amount of weight only to discover some of their double chin remains. This happens because submental fat is more difficult to burn than fat stored elsewhere on the body. There's just no way to exercise your chin!

Your Age

Muscle weakening and loss combined with loss of skin elasticity and tautness create the perfect conditions for the appearance of a double chin. When age is the main cause of a double chin, no amount of dieting and exercising will reduce your chin's "doubleness.” That's where Kybella® injections in Bakersfield, CA may help give you a more attractive profile by destroying fat cells in your chin/upper neck area.

How Does Kybella® Work to Reduce Double Chins?

Minutes after your Bakersfield Kybella® doctor injects the medication into your chin area, the solution's cytolytic properties begin destroying cell membranes of fat cells. Kybella® is almost identical in composition to deoxycholic acid, a substance your body makes to emulsify fat before it is absorbed in the intestines. Once eradicated by Kybella®, these cells can no longer accumulate or store fat. The result — an improved jawline contour and a more streamlined, youthful-looking, chin-to-neck area.

Do Kybella® Injections Cause Side Effects?

Clinical trials and patient reports describe the following side effects of Kybella® injections: swelling/edema, bruising, numbness, rash/redness, induration or hardness around injection sites, skin tightness and increased warmth at injection sites. Since everyone reacts differently to receiving injections, your body's natural inflammatory response to treatment may cause swelling that takes one or two weeks to completely subside. Applying ice packs to swelling or bruising will help relieve any discomfort you may experience. Additionally, bruising is minimal enough that it can be concealed easily with cosmetics.**

How Many Kybella® Treatments Will I Need?

Similar to dermal fillers and Botox, Kybella® is an injectable requiring a series of treatment sessions to provide satisfactory results. You can safely receive multiple injections — up to 50 — at each session. Your doctor may use a topical numbing agent to enhance comfort while you receive your injections. The time it takes for completion of an injection session typically takes less than 30 minutes.

Treatment sessions should be scheduled at least 30 days apart. Most people see visible results after two, three or four sessions.** Your Kybella® doctor in Bakersfield, CA will initially evaluate your double chin and decide how many injections you should need for reducing submental fat.

Is Downtime Needed Following Kybella® Injections?

Unlike liposuction or other fat removal surgeries, Kybella® injections will not interrupt your daily routine in the least bit. However, your doctor will ask you to avoid vigorous physical activity for a few days to prevent prolonged bruising and swelling. Your swelling will peak over the first 48 hours but should gradually improve over the following 5-7 days.**

How Long Do Results Last?

Since the deoxycholic acid in Kybella® targets and destroys fat cells, results should be permanent. Reducing your double chin with Kybella® is not like losing weight, which causes shrinkage rather than elimination of fat cells.

How Much Does Kybella® Cost?

Costing only a quarter of what cosmetic surgeons charge for liposuction or fat removal surgery, Kybella® is the most affordable method of reducing double chins. With no downtime needed, you won't have to miss work or spend days laying in bed waiting for stitches to heal.**

What to Know Before Considering Kybella®

  • Your Bakersfield Kybella® doctor will not administer injections if there is an infection around your chin or upper neck.
  • During your consultation at Synergy Lifestyle Center, tell your doctor if you have a thyroid disorder, blood clotting disorder or a history of undergoing cosmetic treatments on your face, chin or neck.
  • Inform your doctor if you plan to get pregnant or are pregnant. It is not yet known if Kybella® may affect an unborn baby or a woman who is pregnant. Additionally, research hasn't been conducted on breast-feeding mothers receiving Kybella® Consequently, you will want to discuss having Kybella® injections with your doctor if you are breastfeeding.
  • The FDA has not approved Kybella® for people under 18 years old or for use on other areas of the body.
